What is Biden’s
Cybersecurity Executive Order?

In response to the DarkSide ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline, on May 12, 2021, the Biden Administration issued a Cybersecurity Executive Order on Improving the Nation’s Cybersecurity to ensure more secure digital infrastructure, including cloud security. This Cybersecurity Executive Order (EO) includes sections on:

  • Removing barriers to sharing threat information
  • Modernizing federal government cybersecurity
  • Enhancing software supply chain security, for instance by embedding security by design, standardizing the federal government’s playbook for responding to cybersecurity vulnerabilities and incidents
  • Improving detection of cybersecurity vulnerabilities and incidents on federal government networks.

What’s in Biden’s Cybersecurity Executive Order?

Public-Private Partnership
“[C]ybersecurity requires more than government action. Protecting our Nation from malicious cyber actors requires the Federal Government to partner with the private sector. The private sector must adapt to the continuously changing threat environment, ensure its products are built and operate securely, and partner with the Federal Government to foster a more secure cyberspace.” — SEC.

Real-Time Threat Sharing
“[I]ncreasing the sharing of information about…threats, incidents, and risks [is] necessary…to accelerating incident deterrence, prevention, and response efforts and to enabling more effective defense of agencies’ systems and of information collected, processed, and maintained by or for the Federal Government.” — SEC. 2

Advanced Threat Detection
“To keep pace with today’s dynamic and increasingly sophisticated cyber threat environment, the Federal Government must take decisive steps to modernize its approach to cybersecurity, including increasing the Federal Government’s visibility into threats…advance toward Zero Trust Architecture…[and] secure cloud services.” — SEC. 3

How does IronNet help companies comply
with Biden’s Cybersecurity Executive Order?

The 2021 Biden Cybersecurity Executive Order puts forth a number of bold plans that closely align with IronNet’s mission, philosophy, and technical capabilities for ensuring EO compliance:

Public-Private Partnership
  • IronNet’s Collective Defense platform provides for real-time collaboration between the public and private sectors on cybersecurity threats and incident response.
  • Collective Defense community participants can leverage crowdsourced information about incoming attacks, prioritization, and triage insights.

Real-Time Threat Sharing
  • Sharing attack intelligence in real time within IronNet’s IronDome system yields insights on threats being seen across both the public and private sectors.
  • IronDome participants can voluntarily share attack intelligence with the federal government for rapid response to nation-state threats such as Russian cyber attack campaigns or China cyber attacks.

Advanced Threat Detection
  • IronNet’s network detection and response solution, IronDefense, uses AI-driven behavioral analytics to detect cyber anomalies on the network.
  • Because IronDefense cyber analytics are designed to provide early detection of both known and, more uniquely, new and unknown cyber threat behaviors on networks (e.g., lateral movement), they can be used to help maintain a Zero Trust environment, both on-prem and in the cloud.

What is Biden’s Cybersecurity Executive Order for Critical Infrastructure?

On July 28, 2021, Biden issued a national National Security Memorandum on Improving Cybersecurity for Critical Infrastructure Control Systems, almost 90% of which is owned and run by the private sector. As such, the U.S. government has limited visibility of attacks on the sector.

IronNet is breaking down public and private sector silos to provide this visibility through a Collective Defense approach to cybersecurity that yields a real-time cyber radar view of the threat landscape.
Providing situational awareness, IronDome creates a real-time picture of correlated threats across Collective Defense
Community participants, who can voluntarily share anonymous attack intelligence with the federal government.

What are some other ongoing Biden cybersecurity efforts?

Cybersecurity is a national security and economic security imperative for the Biden Administration and we are prioritizing and elevating cybersecurity like never before.
On August 25, 2021, Biden cybersecurity initiatives were announced at a gathering among private sector leaders, including Tom Fanning, President and CEO of Southern Company, who said, “A strong national cyber defense – whether against ransomware or other malicious cyber activity–requires effective public-private collaboration to ensure the federal government and the private sector are working hand-in-glove in our collective cyber defense.”

Challenge
Serving 9 million across 6 states, Southern Company faces risks as a target for cyber actors to steal information or disrupt operations.

Why IronNet
Tom Wilson, Southern Company VP and VISO, says one of the reasons the company works with IronNet is “to get high quality, automated situational awareness and move away from relying on manual methods.”

Of Note
Large companies like Southern Company have technical competency in the cyber area and, with a Collective Defense approach, can help smaller companies benefit from a high volume of information sharing.
